Two distinct GLI variants were offered in 2004. The early 2004 model featured the VR6 engine with a more subtle appearance, while the mid-year "2004.5" refresh introduced the 1.8T with the iconic body kit and Recaro seats—often called the "Red Badge" GLI.
Both shared the 6-speed manual transmission and sport-tuned suspension, but differed significantly in appearance, interior, and available options.

Important: The 2004.5 GLI 1.8T with Recaro seats did NOT offer leather. The wider Recaros also required deletion of the center armrest and precluded heated seats and Climatronic automatic climate control.

The Trade-Off: The 1.8T GLI gained the aggressive styling and upgraded brakes, but lost the VR6's comfort features. The wider Recaro seats required deleting the center armrest, and their design precluded the heating elements and Climatronic sensors. Buyers had to choose between luxury (VR6) or sport (1.8T).
