02M 02M 6-Speed Manual

The 02M is VW's heavy-duty 6-speed manual designed for higher-torque applications. Standard equipment on the MK4 GLI, GTI 1.8T, VR6, and TDI models. The 02M uses a cable-actuated shifter mechanism and features stronger synchros, larger gear faces, and heavier-duty bearings compared to the 02J 5-speed. It shares the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 02Q, making it a popular intermediate upgrade path. The 02M is rated for 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) from the factory but can handle significantly more with quality fluid and careful driving.

5th/6th Gear Synchros
HIGH 100k–150k miles
Symptoms: Grinding or crunching when shifting into 5th or 6th, especially when cold
Fix: Replace synchro rings and hub sleeve. Often caused by old/contaminated fluid. Prevention: change fluid every 60k miles.
OEM Part: 02M 311 295 (5th/6th synchro hub)
Est. Cost: $300–$600 parts / $800–$1,500 shop

Fix: Replace reverse lockout spring and collar on shifter.
OEM Part: 1J0 711 179 (lockout mechanism)
Est. Cost: $20–$50 parts
Input Shaft Bearing
HIGH 120k+ miles

02J 02J 5-Speed Manual

The 02J is VW's standard 5-speed manual paired with lower-torque applications. Found behind the 2.0L 8V in base Jetta GL/GLS and Golf models, as well as some 1.8T and TDI configurations. The 02J uses a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the 02M/02Q, which limits swap compatibility. While adequate for stock 2.0L power, the 02J is the weak link in any modified 1.8T or TDI build. The 5th gear is the most fragile component — failures above 250 lb-ft of torque are well documented. For any build exceeding 200 hp, an 02M swap is strongly recommended.

02Q 02Q 6-Speed Manual (MQ350)

The 02Q (also known as MQ350) is VW/Audi's strongest transverse 6-speed manual gearbox. Originally developed for the Golf R32, Audi TT 3.2, and Audi S3, the 02Q features larger gear faces, triple-cone synchros on 1st and 2nd, heavier-duty bearings, and a reinforced case. It's rated for 500+ Nm (370 lb-ft) which makes it the go-to transmission for big turbo builds. The 02Q shares the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 02M, making it a direct swap into any MK4 that already has an 02M. This is the "build it right the first time" transmission for serious power builds.

09A 09A 5-Speed Tiptronic

The 09A (also known as 09B in some applications) is VW's 5-speed automatic with Tiptronic manual mode. Manufactured by JATCO (Japanese Automatic Transmission Company), the 09A was paired with the VR6 and some 1.8T models. It features a lock-up torque converter, electronic shift solenoids, and a Tiptronic gate that allows sequential manual gear selection. The 09A is significantly more robust than the 01M 4-speed and handles moderate power levels well. Valve body upgrades and shift kit modifications can improve shift firmness and reduce shift times.

01M 01M 4-Speed Automatic

The 01M is VW's entry-level 4-speed automatic, found in base model Jetta, Golf, and New Beetle equipped with the 2.0L 8V engine and some 1.8T configurations. Built by VW/Audi in partnership with JATCO, the 01M is a simple, reliable unit that prioritizes smooth shifting and fuel economy over performance. It features an electronic shift control unit, adaptive shift logic, and a lock-up torque converter. The 01M is known for solenoid issues at higher mileages, but is otherwise a durable transmission for daily driving applications. Not recommended for any modified builds — the 4 speeds and lower torque rating make it the weakest link.
