MK4 FITMENT GUIDE
Every bolt pattern, offset, and tire size for the PQ34 platform. Factory specs, upgrade paths, and where to find the right rubber.
PLATFORM SPECS
Every MK4 VW on the PQ34 platform shares these fundamental wheel mounting specs.
Important: VW MK4 uses ball-seat lug bolts, not conical/acorn-style lug nuts. Aftermarket wheels that use a conical seat require different lug bolts. The 57.1mm center bore is smaller than many aftermarket wheels — use hub-centric rings (e.g., 73.1 to 57.1mm) to prevent vibration. When swapping to 5x112 wheels (from B5 Passat, Audi B6+), you need 5x100 to 5x112 adapters — not recommended for daily use.

PLUS-SIZING CHART
Move up in wheel diameter while keeping overall tire diameter within 3% of factory. This preserves speedometer accuracy, ABS function, and fender clearance.
| Starting Size | Upgrade To | Wheel Width | Tire Size | Diameter Change | Speedo Error |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15" (195/65R15) | Plus One → 16" | 6.5"–7.0" | 205/55R16 | -0.8% | Negligible |
| 15" (195/65R15) | Plus Two → 17" | 7.0"–7.5" | 215/45R17 | -0.6% | Negligible |
| 15" (195/65R15) | Plus Two → 17" | 7.5"–8.0" | 225/45R17 | -0.4% | Negligible |
| 16" (205/55R16) | Plus One → 17" | 7.0"–7.5" | 225/45R17 | +0.4% | Negligible |
| 16" (205/55R16) | Plus Two → 18" | 7.5"–8.0" | 225/40R18 | +0.8% | Negligible |
| 17" (225/45R17) | Plus One → 18" | 8.0"–8.5" | 225/40R18 | +0.4% | Negligible |
| 17" (225/45R17) | Plus Two → 19" | 8.0"–8.5" | 235/35R19 | -0.4% | Caution: clearance tight on stock suspension |
Keep it within 3%. Going beyond a 3% overall diameter change affects ABS/ESP calibration, speedometer accuracy, and can trigger dash warnings. On lowered cars, check inner fender clearance before going wider than 225. ET35 or lower on 8"+ wide wheels may require fender rolling.
TIRE RECOMMENDATIONS
The tires MK4 owners actually run, organized by use case. All available in 205/55R16 and 225/45R17 — the two most common MK4 fitments.
The benchmark all-season UHP tire. Excellent wet grip, predictable at the limit, and the DWS indicators tell you when it's worn past its snow/wet capability. Best overall choice for MK4 daily drivers.
Shop at Tire Rack →Michelin's flagship all-season performance tire. Slightly sportier feel than the DWS 06 Plus with comparable wet grip. Premium price but premium performance. The choice for GTI/GLI owners who push harder.
Shop at Tire Rack →The tire every performance review benchmarks against. Exceptional dry grip, surprisingly long tread life for a summer tire, and outstanding wet performance. The correct choice for a Stage 2+ 1.8T or VR6 turbo build.
Shop at Tire Rack →Slightly more affordable than the PS4S with nearly identical dry grip. Better value per mile. The compound runs cooler, which can mean longer tread life on cars that see occasional autocross.
Shop at Tire Rack →Quiet, composed, and remarkably capable in snow. The MK4 TDI crowd especially favors these for Midwest/Northeast winters. Run in 195/65R15 on a set of cheap steel wheels for the best winter setup.
Shop at Tire Rack →Better ice traction than the X-Ice at the cost of some dry-road manners. If you deal with black ice regularly, this is the tire. The Flex Stud Technology compound stays pliable to -40°F.
Shop at Tire Rack →The autocross king. SCCA-legal, predictable breakaway, and consistent lap times across a session. The MK4 GTI autocross community runs these almost exclusively in 225/45R17 or 225/40R18.
Shop at Tire Rack →When you've turbo'd a VR6 to 400+ hp and the Rivals aren't enough. Semi-slick construction with massive lateral grip. Not recommended for wet or cold — this is a track weapon that happens to be street legal.
