CROSS-PLATFORM COMPATIBILITY

Many parts interchange between vehicles on VW's PQ34 platform. Brakes, suspension, engine internals, and electronics cross between these models.

MK4 FAQ

What engine codes came in the MK4 Jetta GLI?

+

The MK4 Jetta GLI came with the 1.8T 20-valve turbocharged engine. In the US market, this was the AWP engine code (180 hp). European markets received the AUQ code. The 1.8T uses a KKK K03 turbocharger, Bosch ME7.5 engine management, and is one of the most tunable platforms VW ever produced — supporting 400+ WHP with the right supporting modifications.

What transmission does the MK4 GLI use?

+

The MK4 Jetta GLI came standard with the 02M 6-speed manual transmission. Some models were equipped with the 09A 5-speed Tiptronic automatic. The 02M is rated for 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) from the factory and shares its bellhousing pattern with the stronger 02Q (MQ350) used in the Audi TT 3.2.

How much power can a stock 1.8T handle?

+

The stock 1.8T bottom end (rods, pistons, crank) is generally considered safe to around 300 WHP on the factory K03 turbo or a K04 upgrade. Beyond 350 WHP, forged internals (rods and pistons) are recommended. The stock head can flow well past 400 WHP with upgraded valve springs, camshafts, and proper porting.

What is the timing belt interval on the 1.8T?

+

VW revised the 1.8T timing belt interval multiple times. The current recommendation is 75,000-105,000 miles, but many experienced owners replace it at 60,000-75,000 miles for safety. The 1.8T is an interference engine — a broken belt will cause piston-to-valve contact and catastrophic engine damage. Always replace the water pump, tensioner, and idler pulley at the same time.

What parts interchange between MK4 models?

+

The MK4 Jetta, Golf, GTI, R32, New Beetle, Audi TT (8N), and Audi A3 (8L) all share VW's PQ34 platform. This means extensive parts interchangeability: suspension components, brake systems (the 312mm Audi TT big brake upgrade is one of the most popular), engine internals, transmission parts, and many electrical components cross between these vehicles.

Where do I find my VW paint code?

+

Your VW paint code is on a sticker in the trunk/boot, typically on the spare tire well cover or inside the trunk lid. It's a two or three-character code preceded by "L" (e.g., LC9Z for Black Magic Pearl, LA7W for Reflex Silver). We have a complete database of MK4 paint codes organized by model and year.

What should I look for when buying a MK4 GLI?

+

Key inspection points: timing belt service history (1.8T), oil leak at rear main seal and valve cover, rust on rockers and fender arches (especially northern cars), window regulator function, ABS light status, and 02M transmission synchro condition (try 3rd and 4th gear specifically). Clean VR6 6-speeds command $8,000-$14,000 while 1.8T manuals run $6,000-$10,000.

What are the service intervals for the MK4 GLI?

+

Oil changes every 5,000 miles (VW 502.00 spec, 5W-40), timing belt at 75,000 miles (1.8T), brake fluid every 2 years (DOT 4), coolant every 5 years (G12/G13), and manual transmission fluid at 60,000 miles (75W-90 GL-4). We maintain a complete service schedule with OEM specs and recommended brands.
