Rod Bolt Torque (OEM)
30 Nm + 90° (TTY — replace after removal)
Rod Bolt Torque (ARP)
50 ft-lbs with ARP moly lube (ARP 204-6004)
OEM rod bolts are torque-to-yield (TTY) and must be replaced after removal. For any performance build, ARP rod bolts (204-6004) are a mandatory upgrade — they are reusable and provide consistent clamping force. Stock rods with ARP bolts are reliable to approximately 350 WHP.
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

All specifications from VW Factory Repair Manual. TTY (torque-to-yield) bolts must be replaced after removal — they are designed for single use only. Always use calibrated torque wrenches and angle gauges where specified.

CYLINDER HEAD
FASTENERSPECNOTES
Head bolts (OEM TTY)40 Nm + 60° + 60°4-stage torque sequence. Replace bolts after removal. Tighten in VW-specified pattern.

Cam bearing caps10 NmTighten evenly in sequence from center outward.
Camshaft sprocket bolt65 NmHold cam with wrench flats during tightening.
Valve cover bolts10 NmUse new gasket. Tighten in cross pattern.
BOTTOM END
FASTENERSPECNOTES
Main bearing cap bolts30 Nm + 90°TTY — replace after removal. Tighten in sequence.
Connecting rod bolts (OEM)30 Nm + 90°TTY — single use. Cracked-cap design, do not mix caps.
Connecting rod bolts (ARP)50 ft-lbsARP 204-6004 with ARP moly lube. Reusable.

06A 121 133 J — Common failure. Replace with aluminum upgrade.
Coolant Temp Sensor
059 919 501 A (4-pin, green top)
NEVER mix G12 (pink/purple) with G11 (blue/green) coolant. They use incompatible corrosion inhibitors and will gel, clogging the system. When switching, flush the entire system thoroughly. G13 (purple, VW TL 774 J) is backwards-compatible with G12.
