2.0L 8V Engine
The workhorse of the VW lineup. The 2.0L 8-valve is the naturally aspirated standard bearer - simple, reliable, and economical. Found in millions of Golf, Jetta, and New Beetle models, this engine defines daily driver dependability.

The 2.0L 8V's strength is its simplicity. With no turbo, no direct injection, and straightforward SOHC valvetrain, there are fewer failure points than its turbocharged siblings. Timing belt maintenance and regular oil changes are essentially all it needs. Many examples exceed 200,000+ miles with basic care.
Engine Codes
1998-2014AEG
Primary code for Golf/Jetta Mk4 and New Beetle (early). Motronic ME7.5 ECU, OBD-II compliant. Established the 2.0L 8V as the base engine for the Mk4 platform.
AVH
Updated AEG with revised emissions equipment. Golf, Jetta, New Beetle continuation. Minor ECU updates for California PZEV compliance.
AZG
Further emissions updates. Same output as AVH. Found in late Mk4 production vehicles. Essentially identical performance.
BBW / BEV
Final Mk4/early Mk5 variant. Updated catalytic converter placement for emissions. New Beetle and Jetta applications.
CBPA / CBUA
Jetta Mk6 base engine variant. Continued the 2.0L 8V tradition into the modern era. Budget-friendly option.
Common Issues & Maintenance
TroubleshootingKnown Problem Areas
- Timing BeltReplace every 80k mi
- Coolant FlangePlastic cracks
- Coil PackOccasional failure
- Valve Cover GasketOil leaks
- Mass Air FlowSensor degradation
- Thermostat HousingPlastic failure
Maintenance Intervals
- Oil Change5,000-7,500 mi
- Timing Belt80,000 mi
- Spark Plugs40,000 mi
- CoolantEvery 5 years
- Air Filter30,000 mi
- Trans Fluid60,000 mi
The 2.0L 8V is an interference design - if the timing belt breaks, the valves will contact the pistons causing severe engine damage. Replace the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump every 80,000 miles without exception. This is the single most important maintenance item.
Vehicle Applications

| VW Jetta Mk6 2.0 | 2011-2014 | CBPA | Base engine option |
Modification Potential
Tuning NotesThe 2.0L 8V is not a performance platform. Intake, exhaust, and chip modifications yield minimal gains (5-15 hp typically). For significant power increases, most enthusiasts swap to 1.8T, VR6, or 2.0T engines which bolt into the same chassis. The 2.0L 8V's value is reliability and low operating costs, not performance potential.
