2.8L VR6 24V Engine
Complete technical specifications from official VW repair manuals. The 24-valve VR6 adds DOHC heads with four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing, increasing power to 201-204 PS.
24V VR6 Engine Codes
2.8L FamilyBDF
Primary USA code for Golf Mk4 V6 and Jetta GLX VR6. Variable intake manifold and VVT on intake cam. Most common 24V VR6 in North America.
AUE
European variant for Golf V6 and Bora V6 4Motion. Slightly higher output than BDF. Available with Haldex-based 4Motion AWD.
BDE
Audi-specific variant for A3 8L V6. European market only. Limited production numbers.

Design OverviewValvetrain Design
- ConfigurationDOHC 24-valve
- Valves Per Cylinder4 (2 int / 2 exh)
- Camshafts2 (single shared head)
- Valve ActuationRoller rocker arms
- Hydraulic AdjustmentYes (HVA)
- VVT SystemIntake cam only
Timing System
- Primary DriveDuplex chain
- Chain LocationTransmission side
- TensionerHydraulic (oil pressure)
- Guide RailsPlastic (wear item)
- VVT Range~42° crankshaft
- VVT ControlN205 solenoid valve
The 24V VR6 timing chain system is more complex than the 12V. Plastic guides wear over time, causing chain slap and timing issues. Inspect at 100,000 miles and replace tensioners/guides preventatively. Chain replacement requires transmission removal - budget 12-16 hours labor.

The 24V VR6's variable valve timing relies on clean oil for proper operation. The VVT solenoid (N205) can clog with sludge if oil changes are neglected. Always use VW 502.00 specification synthetic oil and maintain 5,000-7,500 mile change intervals.

| Reliability | Excellent | Good (chain attention) |
Despite lower power output, the 12V VR6 remains popular for: simpler valvetrain (fewer failure points), stronger mid-range torque, easier maintenance, and proven reliability. For turbo builds, many prefer the 12V for its robust bottom end, lower compression, and lower parts costs.
