Quick NavGeneral VW Torque Guidelines
CriticalVW uses torque-to-yield (TTY) stretch bolts extensively on TDI engines. These bolts are designed to deform permanently during tightening. Never reuse a TTY bolt - they will not achieve correct clamping force a second time. Head bolts, main bearing bolts, connecting rod bolts, flywheel bolts, and crankshaft pulley bolts are all single-use on TDI engines.
Angle Torque Procedure
- Step 1Torque to initial Nm value
- Step 2Turn additional degrees
- Angle WrenchRequired (VW T10051)
- LubricationBolts go in DRY unless noted
- SequenceAlways inside-out pattern
- Wait TimeHead bolts: retorque after 30 min
Thread Locking Compounds
- Loctite 243 (blue)Intake manifold, brackets
- Loctite 262 (red)Flywheel, engine mount bolts
- Anti-seizeGlow plugs, exhaust studs
- Sealant D 176 404 A2Oil pan, timing cover
- Never on TTY boltsHead bolts go in DRY
T10051 - Angle torque gauge. 3359 - Injection pump timing (ALH). T10115 - Camshaft locking bar (PD). T10060 - Crank counterhold. T40001 - Adapter for crank seal. All TDI timing belt jobs require the correct locking tools to prevent catastrophic valve contact.
1.9 TDI ALH - VP37 Rotary Pump
1998-2003Golf Mk4, Jetta Mk4, New Beetle. 90 hp / 210 Nm. Bosch VP37 distributor injection pump, indirect injection via swirl chambers. The most bulletproof TDI ever made.

1.9 TDI PD - Pumpe Düse (Unit Injector)
2004-2006BEW (Jetta/Golf, 100 hp), BRM (Jetta Mk5, 100 hp), BHW (Passat, 134 hp). Direct injection via camshaft-driven unit injectors. Injection pressures up to 2050 bar - far higher than the VP37.
PD unit injectors are clamped directly into the cylinder head by the camshaft. The clamp bolt torque of 25 Nm is extremely critical - overtorquing cracks the injector body, undertorquing causes combustion gas leaks and injector failure. Use a calibrated torque wrench. VW tool T10115 locks the camshaft during this procedure.

2.0 TDI Common Rail (EA189)
2009-2014CBEA (Jetta, 140 hp), CJAA (Jetta/Golf, 140 hp), CKRA (Passat, 150 hp). Bosch common rail injection up to 1800 bar. Piezoelectric injectors require extreme care during torquing.
The common rail piezoelectric injectors are clamped at only 8 Nm. This is not a typo. These are precision ceramic components - overtorquing will crack the injector body, causing a fuel leak at 1800 bar pressure. Use a precision torque wrench. Cost per injector: $400-600.

2.0 TDI EA288
2015+CRUA (Golf/Jetta, 150 hp), DGDA/DTUA (various). Latest generation common rail TDI. Revised head bolt procedure, spur-gear balance shaft, and extended timing belt interval per EA288evo SSP: 210,000 km with no time limit.
Per the EA288evo self-study program (SSP), the timing belt replacement interval is 210,000 km with no time-based limit. The belt runs on the exhaust side and drives only the camshaft - the balance shaft uses a spur-toothed gear drive at 2x crankshaft speed. This is a significant departure from earlier TDI designs.

3.0 V6 TDI (EA897)
Audi / VW TouaregCASA (Audi Q7, 225 hp), CATA (Audi A4/A5/A6/Q5, 240 hp), DCPC (Audi A6/A7/Q5, 286 hp). V6 common rail diesel with timing chain (not belt). Balance shaft driven by chain. From EA897 workshop manual.
Unlike 4-cylinder TDIs, the 3.0 V6 uses a timing chain system, not a belt. The chain drives both camshafts and the balance shaft. Chain tensioners are hydraulic and oil-pressure-dependent. Always check chain stretch with diagnostic software before assuming a timing issue.
